A Meme... with a few old snaps

Amylia, Jamie, and Heidi tagged me for the meme that's spreading like wildfire throughout the OC.

To participate, one must:

  • Link to the person’s blog who tagged you.
  • Post these rules on your blog.
  • List seven random and/or weird facts about yourself
  • Tag seven random people at the end of your post and include links to their blogs.
  • Let each person know that they have been tagged by posting a comment on their blog.

Seven, huh?

Well, here we go...

#1. Recently, I made the rather shocking discovery that I am incapable of telling a joke.

Now, it's not that I'm not funny.

Oh, I'm funny.

I just can't tell a joke.

How do I know this?

Because my husband proved it to me after dinner one night last week when, despite much coaching on his part, I could not tell a simple joke.

It kept coming out like this:

"A guy walks into a bar with a duck on his head. Bartender says: 'Hey, what's that duck doing on your head?' Ughhhhh... Wait, wait-- let me try again. A guy walks into a bar with a duck on his head. Bartender says, 'Hey, why is that thing on your head?' GAH!"

And so on.

(Big-time kudos to whoever knows the name of the truly awesome movie this pathetically-rendered joke comes from.)

#2. I was a thumb sucker.

Until I was nearly 8-years old.

Always the right thumb.

When asked why not the other, I told people the left thumb tasted like pepper.

#3. I came darn close to dying after giving birth to Joseph.

Darn close.

Two days after a perfectly normal (albeit long), intervention-free labor and birth-- I was admitted to the hospital with sepsis (an infection in the blood).

Thankfully, Ryan and Joseph were allowed to stay with me.

It took a week in the hospital and two
weeks recovering at home before I could
finally take my boy outside for a walk.

#4.
I have a trick left thumb. Ryan thought it best not to include a photo.

Let's just say it's tricky.

#5. When I was very young, my mother's nickname for me was "Tilly Tippy Twinkle Toes."

#6. As kids, whenever my siblings and I watched the Wizard of Oz, we'd yell "I'm the ___!"-- and then call out the name of the character we wanted to "be" for the duration of the movie.

I always chose the Scarecrow.

#7. And finally, I will end this meme on a totally random note:

My 80s haircut.

Admittedly, not all that outrageous compared to some.

Ahhh-- but look at the inspiration:

And then, that inspiration fully (and finally) realized at an office Halloween party--
c. 1986.

Oh yeah.

Big 80s.

There you have it.

I realize that most folks have already been tagged, but I'm tagging nonetheless:

Tom, Scott Marvel, Val, Elizabeth, Jen, and Wil-- if you haven't shared your seven already and would like to join in the fun, consider yourself tagged!

oh my! I LOVE the 80's photos! Too "cool" (note I use that word loosely and in quotation marks :)

How scary about the infection after giving birth. My sister got an infection after giving birth to her 2nd son (c-section) in a post-Katrina New Orleans hospital and with type 1 diabetes it still is a problem. it has healed for the most part but is not the same. scary stuff.

thumb sucking until 8? left thumb tasting like pepper? too funny! thanks so much for playing along...

Holy ... Sandra, those pictures are awesome. You make the best 80's diva OF ALL TIME. Hands down.

And I can't tell a joke, either. Witty quips? Sure. But a rehearsed joke with a definitive start and end? No way. I end up fumbling and blushing within 10 second. I feel your pain.

Oh my GOD!!! Those eighties photos - I LOVE IT!

I'm pretty sure you could learn to tell that joke. Maybe. Maybe Ryan knows better. Alright. He definitely does. :(

I want a photo of your thumb. Why was this not demonstrated when I met you in person??

Yes! 80's pics! If I have my Halloween 1985 pics available...

Scary about your post-partum time with Joseph. Greg's mom had placenta accreta (I think that's right) with him (in England, across the ocean from both families) and nearly died/nearly needed a hysterectomy from the hemorrhage. Same thing happened with his brother seven years later, but the doc knew what to do to prevent a hemorrhage.

Amylia-

Glad you enjoyed the snaps. And thanks again for tagging me-- this was a lot of fun.

Hey, I'm so sorry to hear of your sister's ordeal. You are so right-- scary stuff, indeed.

Kerri-

Aw shucks, ya' think?

So glad to hear I'm not the only one with this affliction. Can't tell you how ridiculous I felt doing exactly what you describe-- over and over...

Nicole-

Ryan really does know better on this one-- the man has been telling me jokes with expert skill for over 20 years...

And hey-- sorry about not bringing out the thumb when we met.

I guess I just don't like to show off.

Next time, I promise. :-)

Rachel-

Oh yes, please do pull out 80s pics of your own! I'd love to see them. :-)

And wow about Greg's mom-- how frightening!

Oh my gawd, you, like, totally look like Patty Smyth from Scandal in that last picture.

I can never remember the jokes to re-tell them. Which is why I like jokes like this: A priest, a horse and an Irishman walk into the bar and the bartender yells "What is this, a f*cking joke?" It's short. Easy for my feeble brain to remember. You can borrow it if you want. Solidarity in numbers and all that.

Um, even if it was the 80s, you still look gorgeous. And like a movie star.

And I was not a thumb sucker until I was 8, but I was a pacifier sucker until I was 5 1/2. Possibly worse.

Julia-

LOL!

Thanks-- I need all the help I can get with this one.

And that joke sounds like just the ticket.

BDM-

Wow... what a nice thing to say. :-)

Thanks!

Sandra,
I love the pictures! I had a curly perm for most of the eighties which was really BAD! Your eighties hair was so cute! Those were some interesting times & styles, weren't they?

Those are quite the photos! You're clearly also very brave because you're prepared to share them!

That infection sounded scary. I'm glad you made it through!

Have a great Thanksgiving.

Great list and those 80's pictures are AWESOME! I wish I had been around back then, stir-up pants and big hair...wow!

In response to your comment, I went to the dentist today, and it was fun!
My sister just came back from visiting a friend in Boston, and I wish I could have gone with her. The accent is so amazing. So is the fact that a portion of The Departed was filmed in your home town. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
