Inspired

"Mama come here," Evan calls from the top of the stairs.

"What is it honey?"

She tilts her head to one side and smiles.

"Just come here, Mama."

When I reach the bottom of the stairs, she pats a bulge in the front of her dress, still smiling.

"Honey, do you have something under your dress?"

She then lifts her purple sun dress to reveal something black about the size of a cell phone sticking out of the top of her Care Bear underpants.

"Evan, wha- what is that?"

Slowly she pulls out an old cell phone case-- one that Joseph had tried to use to hold his pump.

"Mama, it's my insulin pump. I'm doing a story and this is my insulin pump. I'm a superhero -- and I have diabetes."

"Oh."

"Do you know what my name is?"

"Nooooo."

"I'm Danielle and I have a boo-boo ring."

Then she pauses a moment, looking very serious.

"And Mama, I'm a fighter."

Sarah--

I agree.

When Evan said she had diabetes, I got pretty choked up.

But at the same time, I thought it was damn wonderful that she sees Joseph's diabetes as a source of strength rather than a weakness.

That is very cool! You can't underestimate how much younger siblings look up to their older brothers and sisters- huh? Evan wants to be just like her big brother, diabetes and all! :)

Being a fighter runs in the family, I see. Hope all is well.

Too cute and yes, a little disheartening...and yes, "damn wonderful that she sees Joseph's diabetes as a source of strength rather than a weakness".

Wow - our little ones don't miss a beat, do they?

Very sweet - can I say she is absolutely adorable??

Cute story.

Aww, how cute is she?! Just too cute. :)

Yeah, that kind of jabbed at my heart when I read your post... it's amazing how perceptive little ones are. How wonderful that she sees Joseph as a fighter... and it seems, in a way, that she was trying to emulate him... which is both sweet and sad in ways.

Thanks for that post~ :)

This is so great! My 5 yr old, when she was 2 and 3, would wear a wooden block in her back pocket to pretend she had a pump too. Your story is total heartbreaker!

Kind of a bitter sweet story. But, you can tell she's got a good attitude and a fighting spirit when it comes to D. Gee, wonder where she gets that from:-)
